Adventure Commons, Inc. ("Adventure Commons," "we," "us," or "our") is a collective agency for the adventure travel industry. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, share, and protect personal information when you visit adventurecommons.travel (the "Site"). It also covers when you download our reports, subscribe to our emails, read our traveler features, take part in our surveys, contact us, or buy our services.

We work with two audiences. Our agency services, reports, and industry surveys are for organizations in adventure travel, such as destinations, DMOs, tour operators, accommodations, travel advisors, and outdoor brands. We also publish features, newsletters, and other content for individual adventure travelers. This policy applies to both.

1. Who we are and how to reach us

Adventure Commons, Inc. is a Delaware corporation. For the purposes of data protection law, we are the controller of the personal information described in this policy.

2. Information we collect

Information you give us

Report downloads. To access our reports, such as the Adventure Travel AI Visibility Index (as an example) and others as available, we ask for your first name, email address, and company name.

Email subscriptions. If you tick the opt-in box, we use your name and email address to send our newsletter and updates. Downloading a report does not subscribe you on its own. We may offer separate lists for industry professionals and for travelers, and you can subscribe to or leave each one independently.

Traveler features and newsletters. If you sign up for our traveler content, we collect your name and email address. You may also choose to tell us about your travel interests, such as preferred destinations, trip styles, activities, or when you plan to travel. We use this to make our content more relevant to you.

Contact and custom report requests. We collect your name, email address, company, and whatever you tell us about your project or organization.

Surveys and research. We run surveys, and they may ask for more than our other forms. That can include your job title, role, organization type, country or region, company size, business and operational details, marketing practices, technology use, travel habits and preferences, and your views on industry and travel topics. Each survey will explain what it collects and why. Taking part is always voluntary.

Purchases and payments. If you buy a subscription or service, we collect billing contact details. Card payments are processed by our payment provider, currently Stripe. We do not receive or store full card numbers. For project work paid by wire transfer, we collect the billing and remittance details needed to invoice you and reconcile payments.

Engagements and events. If we work together, or you attend a workshop or training session, we collect the information needed to deliver that work.

Information we collect automatically

When you use the Site, we and our partners collect certain information automatically, using cookies, pixels, tags, and similar technologies. This may include:

  • your IP address and approximate location

  • your browser and device type

  • the pages you view and the links you click

  • the referring website

  • the date and time of your visit

  • how you interact with our emails, such as opens and clicks

Information from other sources

We may collect publicly available information about organizations. Examples include their websites, their listings, and how they appear in search engines and AI assistants, which is central to our AI visibility work. We may also receive your information from event partners or referral partners where you have agreed to it.

3. How we use your information

We use personal information to:

  • deliver the reports, resources, and services you request

  • send newsletters and updates if you have opted in

  • personalize the traveler content, features, and recommendations we send you

  • respond to your inquiries and prepare proposals

  • conduct surveys and research, and publish aggregated findings

  • process payments, manage subscriptions, and keep business records

  • understand how the Site is used and improve our content and services

  • run and measure advertising, including showing our ads to people who have visited the Site

  • protect the security of the Site and prevent fraud or misuse

  • comply with legal obligations and enforce our terms

4. Surveys and research

When you take part in an Adventure Commons survey:

What you are told up front. The survey itself will tell you who is running it, what it will be used for, and whether any partner is involved.

How results are published. Published findings are aggregated or de-identified. We do not publicly attribute an individual response to you or your organization without your permission.

When survey terms apply. If a survey has its own privacy notice or terms, those apply along with this policy. Where the two differ, the survey-specific terms control for that survey.

What we won't ask for. We don't intend to ask for sensitive personal information in surveys, such as health, racial or ethnic origin, religious beliefs, or sexual orientation. If a future survey ever does, it will ask for your explicit consent first.

5. Our use of artificial intelligence

We use AI tools in our work. These tools help us to:

  • research publicly available information about organizations that request our services

  • analyze and summarize survey responses

  • organize and enrich our contact records

  • draft reports, recommendations, and content

The rules we follow:

  • Our team reviews AI-assisted work before it is used or shared.

  • We do not make decisions about you based solely on automated processing that produce legal or similarly significant effects.

  • When we use third-party AI providers, we choose services and settings that do not use the information we submit to train their general models, wherever those options exist.

6. Cookies, analytics, and advertising

We use cookies and similar technologies for three purposes:

Analytics. We use Google Analytics, Google Tag Manager, and similar analytics tools to understand how visitors use the Site.

Advertising and retargeting. We use, or may use, advertising pixels from providers such as Meta, LinkedIn, and Feathr, along with other advertising partners. These let us measure our campaigns and show our ads to people who have visited the Site. These partners may collect information about your activity on the Site and across other websites.

Site operation. Our website platform, Squarespace, sets cookies needed for the Site to work.

Your choices:

  • Cookie banner. Where required by law, we ask for your consent before setting non-essential cookies. You can change your choice at any time through the cookie settings on the Site.

  • Browser controls. Most browsers let you block or delete cookies.

  • Google Analytics. You can opt out using the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

  • Ad settings. You can manage interest-based ads through your Meta and LinkedIn ad settings, and through industry tools such as optout.aboutads.info and youronlinechoices.eu.

  • Global Privacy Control. We honor GPC browser signals as a request to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information for targeted advertising.

7. How we share information

We do not sell your personal information for money. We share it only as described below.

Service providers. We use trusted providers who process information on our behalf and under our instructions. These include:

  • website hosting (Squarespace)

  • email marketing (currently MailerLite)

  • workflow automation (Zapier)

  • productivity and data storage (Google Workspace, including Google Sheets)

  • our platform partner coOwn

  • payment processing (Stripe)

  • analytics

  • AI providers

Our tools may change over time. Any new provider we use for these purposes will be held to the same standards.

Adventure Commons collaborators. We are a collective. Strategists, marketers, and contractors working on our behalf may access information needed for a specific engagement, and they are bound by confidentiality obligations.

Campaign, research, and travel partners. We share your information with a specific partner, sponsor, destination, or tour operator only in two cases. The first is when you ask us to, for example by requesting information about a featured trip. The second is when that campaign, report, or survey explicitly tells you so at the point you provide your information.

Advertising partners. As described in Section 6, advertising partners receive information through pixels on the Site. Under some US state laws, this may count as "sharing" for cross-context behavioral advertising. You can opt out as described in Sections 6 and 10.

Legal and safety. We may disclose information to comply with law, respond to lawful requests, or protect our rights, users, or others.

Business transfers. If Adventure Commons is involved in a merger, acquisition, financing, or sale of assets, personal information may be transferred as part of that transaction. It will remain subject to this policy.

8. International transfers

We are based in the United States, and our service providers may process information in the United States and other countries. When we transfer personal information from the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, or Switzerland, we rely on appropriate safeguards, such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or our providers' participation in the EU-US Data Privacy Framework.

9. How long we keep information

We keep personal information only as long as needed for the purposes described in this policy:

  • Newsletter subscriber details, including any travel interests you share: until you unsubscribe.

  • Report and contact form information: generally up to three years after our last interaction.

  • Survey responses: only as long as needed for the research, after which they are deleted or de-identified.

  • Payment and business records: as long as required for accounting, tax, and legal purposes.

10. Your rights and choices

Email. Every marketing email includes an unsubscribe link. You can also write to privacy-ac@adventurecommons.travel. We may still send transactional messages, such as delivering a report you requested or information about an active engagement.

Access, correction, and deletion. Depending on where you live, you may have the right to:

  • access the personal information we hold about you

  • correct it

  • delete it

  • receive a portable copy

  • object to or restrict certain processing

  • withdraw consent

To make a request, email privacy-ac@adventurecommons.travel. We will need to verify your identity before responding. We will respond within the time required by applicable law, and we will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.

EEA, UK, and Switzerland. We process your information on these legal bases:

  • your consent, for example for newsletters, non-essential cookies, and surveys

  • the performance of a contract, for example delivering services you purchase

  • our legitimate interests, for example responding to inquiries, improving the Site, and understanding our market, balanced against your rights

  • compliance with legal obligations

You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

California and other US states. Residents of California and other states with comprehensive privacy laws may have the rights described above, plus:

  • the right to know what categories of personal information we collect and disclose

  • the right to opt out of the "sale" or "sharing" of personal information for targeted advertising

The categories we collect are:

  • identifiers (name, email, IP address)

  • commercial information (purchases)

  • internet activity information

  • general geolocation

  • professional information (company, role)

  • travel interests and preferences you choose to share

  • inferences drawn from survey or research participation

To opt out, use the cookie settings on the Site, enable Global Privacy Control, or email us. If we deny a request, you may appeal by replying to our decision. Authorized agents may submit requests on your behalf with proof of authorization.

Canada. We send commercial electronic messages only with your consent, and we comply with Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL). You may withdraw consent at any time.

11. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and physical safeguards to protect personal information, and we limit access to people who need it. No system is completely secure, so we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a breach affects your information, we will notify you where the law requires.

12. Children

The Site and our services are intended for adults. They are not directed to children under 16, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 16. If you believe a child has provided us with information, contact us at privacy-ac@adventurecommons.travel and we will delete it.

13. Links to other websites

The Site links to other websites, including Adventure.Travel and the websites of destinations, operators, and brands we feature. Those sites are governed by their own privacy policies, and we encourage you to review them.

14. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy as our services, tools, and legal requirements change. We will post the updated version on this page with a new effective date. For material changes, we may also notify subscribers by email.
